Santander Ceramic’s Renewable Energy Initiative: A Gold Standard Certified Sustainability Project

In the current scenario, concerns about climate change and environmental sustainability are increasingly prevalent, emphasizing the importance of highlighting initiatives that promote responsible business practices and contribute to carbon emissions reduction.

It is in this context that projects certified through the Gold Standard for the Global Goals assume an essential role.

This world-recognized organization establishes stringent standards to ensure that greenhouse gas emission reduction projects not only meet their environmental goals but also generate positive impacts in local communities.

An inspiring example of such an initiative is one of our projects located in Colombia, led by Santander Ceramic’s Sustainable Energy Project.

Santander Ceramic’s Commitment to Sustainability

Santander Ceramic is a Colombian company with a long history in the production of construction materials. Since its inception, the company has been committed to quality and innovation, constantly seeking ways to enhance its processes and products.

However, in an increasingly conscious regarding the importance of sustainability, Santander Ceramic decided to take a step further and integrate environmentally responsible practices into its operations.

Reducing Carbon Emissions Through Renewable Biomass

The most significant initiative was based on the company’s decision to replace the use of coal in its operations since 2007. Coal, a non-renewable and highly polluting energy source, was previously used extensively in the company’s production process.

However, knowing its environmental impact, the company chose to explore more sustainable alternatives.

Since then, Santander Ceramic has been switching and certifying, through a methodology approved by the Gold Standard, part of the coal used in its kilns with renewable biomass.

This fuel is derived from organic waste and plant materials, being a clean and renewable energy source that helps reduce carbon emissions associated with ceramic production.

This change not only reduced the company’s environmental impact but also promoted the use of more sustainable and renewable energy sources, for a more sustainable future in line with globally established goals.

Positive Impacts on Sustainability and Local Development

The project led by Sustainable Carbon and Santander Ceramic has undergone multiple verifications since its beginning.

In the first credit period, three verifications were conducted, and it is currently undergoing the process of the fourth verification, the first verification of the second credit period.

These verifications ensure that the project meets the stringent standards set by the Gold Standard and demonstrates its effectiveness in reducing carbon emissions.

To date, the project has avoided the emission of more than 150,000 tons of CO2.

Furthermore, it is expected that by the end of its lifetime, the project will reduce more than 130,000 tons of CO2.

These results reflect a commitment that will result in a total of over 280,000 tons of avoided CO2 emissions.

Santander Ceramic’s Project: Contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Moreover, the company contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), primarily focusing on:

  • SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy;
  • SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth;
  • SDG 13 – Climate Action.

Through job creation in the production of renewable biomass and the promotion of access to clean energy, Santander ceramic demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and a more inclusive future for all while actively addressing climate change.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the project achieves various positive impacts, especially in local communities.

The use of renewable biomass has encouraged the collection and utilization of organic waste, providing an additional source of income for local distributors and promoting sustainable economic development.

The project funds local improvements for the community’s livelihoods, such as paving access roads to community schools and providing shelter and food for abandoned animals.

Leading the Way to a Sustainable Legacy

With this project, we highlight our pioneering role in adopting sustainable practices, serving as an inspiring example of how we are helping companies integrate environmentally responsible practices into their operations and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Without doubt, by receiving the Gold Standard certification, the company demonstrates its commitment not only to the environment but also to the well-being of local communities and our global future.

We hope that more companies will follow this example and work towards a better and more sustainable planet for all.
